Earth 2253:
"SIGHTINGS! Reports continue to pour in from the solar rim that the Koeleshian Military has finally arrived at the Milky Way galaxy! Be aware that Earth will be entering a Code Red LockDown until further notice! Please stay tuned for the latest and stay safe!"
This was the first time humans had ever felt pressure like this. The Crusaders and regular soldiers had been scouting space what seemed like forever. Only one man had not started to feel cramped in his star ship and that was Sionis. He had grown up in space; this was his home.
The ships had stayed close to the solar system and sent scouts out to see how the resource systems were doing. One scout never returned from his duty and it was decided a few Crusaders should go investigate. Sionis Sepher and Michael Stanton voted to go alone and they arrived on a small ice covered planet only a few hours later.
Days before they had left, the Space Federation had awarded the human Crusaders with a group of fifty X7 Spaceships. These ships were small and fast, strong and stable. They were to eventually be awarded the best design for any of the Kalactan X Models. In a last minute move, a Kalactan General had one of the ships painted white for the Supreme General of the Human Crusaders to fly.
Michael and Sionis stood looking out across the snowy field and Michael turned to look at the Supreme crusader, "You know I can barely see your ship cause it blends in so well but in that black outfit you stick out like a sore thumb. Sionis turned and replied, "Navy Blue doesn't exactly fit here either." "Why do you get black?" "I get black because it shows I'm different." "You're different?" Sionis nodded slowly as he continued to stare into the snow. "I am the first Human Crusader, traces of my DNA can be found in each of you." "So you get to wear black? I don't get it." Sionis smiled, "Let's get moving." "That's not fair, I still don't see why you get to wear..." Sionis' hand shot up and Michael stopped talking. The two waited quietly until they could hear footsteps and a man asking, "Are you sure this is where they came down?"
Michael ran behind some rocks and Sionis followed. He pulled a "stinger" from his weapons holdster and Michael looked at him in disbelief. "Hey, other than training... how many of people have you killed?" "I guess..." Sionis' movement was too fast for Michael to follow and he collapsed to the ground as the stinger went off in the Supreme Crusader's hand. Recovering from the sound, Michael rolled over to see a Hyperion Soldier fall lifeless to the ground missing half of his head. Sionis grabbed Michael and pulled him around to a different hiding spot and kneeling back down quietly whispered, "I suspect that was my first." "we heard somoene else," Michael replied, "There are at least two more of them. This guy must have been a scout." Sionis stood slowly and pulled Michael up with him. "They usually do recon missions in a group of about fifteen." "We can't kill fifteen of these guys! This one practically got us by himself!" "Did he?" "Well..." Michael could see that Sionis was smiling and nearly shouted, "You knew he was there? Why didn't you tell me?" "Oh that would have been smart! Then he would have taken cover before I could kill him." Sionis froze again and waved for Michael to get down. Taking no chances he did as told and watched as Sionis quickly moved behind a rather large rock. The two sat quietly for a moment and then the two soldiers they had heard talking before came around a corner and saw Michael sitting there. They pulled their weapons to fire but Michael was faster and shot one in the neck, severing his head completely. The second soldier had taken aim but before he got the shot off Sionis had brought him down.
"Are you okay?" Michael looked up at Sionis but couldn't respond. His stinger was sitting in his arms just as they had when he took his shot. Sionis shook his head, "Listen Michael there are still thirteen of those guys out there so if we are going to kill them then we need to get moving." "Kill them?" Michael asked in a shout as his vocal chords suddenly sprang back to life. "Well we can't just leave them here." "I don't see why not! We'll go back and tell everyone what happened. The Kalactans can send one of their big Cruisers to take care of these guys." Sionis threw his arms up in the air and shouted, "Did you even READ the mission briefing? This planet contains the supplies needed for FUEL! They are scouting so that the Koeleshian fleet can come here and fill up before heading on to Earth. If we kill these guys then the Koeleshians will figure this planet is guarded and go somewhere else. That should stall them for a few days at the least." "Yeah yeah I understand. Let's just get this over with then."
The sun was beginning to go down and the warriors were worried about fighting in the dark but just when they thought they might not even find the Hyperion camp site Sionis heard voices. Careful not to say anything, the Crusader put his finger to his ear and pointed to a rock. The two quickly shuffled behind it and listened in on the conversation below. The first voice sounded older and deeper, “Where is Silas? He should have been back from patrol by now.” Another voice answered, “He probably got lost in the desert.” Others seemed to laugh at the statement and Sionis leaned to Michael to say, “I’m thinking six Gamehoppers.” The partner nodded in agreement, “Are we going to take them all on?” Sionis smiled, “Exactly.” "Didn't you say there are usually fifteen?" "I'm not always right."
Making sure his stinger was loaded Sionis counted to three then the two Crusaders came from around the rock and opened fire. Sionis hit two Gamehoppers wounding one and killing the other while Michael killed one as well. The one who had escaped harm ran for it but Sionis was already on him. Michael went over to the wounded Gamehopper and asked, “How many of you are there?” The bleeding warrior looked him in the face and laughed, “Fifteen.” “Oh.” Michael took his second kill and then stood to see Sionis running after the other Hyperion. "SIONIS! You were right! There are more around here somewhere." Sionis didn't hear what Michael had said but he had just dropped his stinger to lighten his load. He ran as hard as he could and then finally pounced on the man bringing him to the ground. The Hyperion turned around and slammed Sionis in the face but the Crusader just returned the blow knocking the soldier back. The Crusader then reached down and picked the man up by the collar of his shirt and said, “Go tell you leader there are hundreds more of us waiting for them. Tell him you won't win if you start a war with us." The Hyperion seemed to nod and Sionis stood. The soldier took off running again and Michael looked over at the kid and handing Sionis his stinger said, "There were fifteen. You just let half of the recon squad get away and I doubt the Koeleshians will doubt that as a heavy defense. Sionis nodded slightly, "Let's get back to our ships." "Oh you want to shoot them down? Won't work, they'll be halfway through the atmosphere by the time we get our ships on and start priming the engines." "Quit whining and lets get back to the ship."
The two walked back to the ships rather slowly and Michael was starting to feel the cold air through his uniform. As they came to the area where the ships were sitting Sionis stopped once more and looked at Michael. "Do you have any ammo?" "Yeah, what's going on?" "Is there enough to get nine people?" "Should be." "Then lets just get this over with." "What are you talking about?"
Sionis said nothing but pointed forward and said, "The Hyperion squad is going to ambush us. We go about ten more feet and then we break. When they realize we are on to them they'll start to panic and lose track of their plans. Don't show fear that will help them stay calm and in control." "Right," Michael said with a chuckle, "I'll be emotionless with seven soldiers gunning me down; sounds like fun." "Good." "I wasn't being serious..."
Before Michael could finish his sentence Sionis had started walking again. He counted the steps the Supreme Crusader made and then as soon as he reached his tenth the two bounded off in oposite directions. Just as Sionis had predicted the Hyperions came out from hiding to get a better shot at their targets. Sionis moved fast and took down one of the soldiers with ease. He was beginning to notice that even against these enhanced soldiers, he was faster and he was quickly learning to use this to his advantage.
There were eight soldiers left but Michael could only see four. He quickly dove behind some rocks and took some blind shots hoping to God that he wouldn't hit Sionis. There was a shout and he looked out to see he had actually hit one. The man was holding his chest and feeling very guilty Michael shot the soldier in the head to put the man out of his pain. Suddenly Michael noticed that all of the weapon fire was being drawn away from him. He climbed on top of the rock and looked out to see that Sionis had killed three soldiers now and was pinned behind a rock by the five others. He slid down and returned to moving from rock to rock until he was right on top of the enemy soldiers. He waited patiently for the very thing that he knew Sionis would be waiting for and as soon as it came, the two Crusaders took aim and fired. The Hyperions, who had stopped shooting to reload their weapons, didn't see this coming and were taken down in the assault.
Michael and Sionis met up by the soldiers and saw all five huddled together where they had been shot. Sionis picked up his weapon to fire again and Michael grabbed it. "We don't have to mutilate them." "What if they are still alive?" "Then they'll sit here and die in the cold." Sionis paused for a moment but finally put his weapon away. Michael patted him on the back and said, "So we killed fifteen soldiers today. I'm guessing that's a new record."
Sionis spent nearly twenty mintues checking his X7 over for enemy devices before finally saying he would leave. Michael nodded and then started priming his engine when he saw movement among the dead bodies. Two of the soldiers had gotten up and were running for some very large rocks. Michael opened his cockpit and shouted to Sionis that they were getting away. The Supreme Crusader grabbed his stinger again but it was too late the sound of a large ship could be heard in the distance. Michael was about to turn his engine on when Sionis nearly jumped into the cockpit and shut the ship off.
Michael shouted, "What are you doing?" "I'm saving your life!" "This is stupid! Just let me go after them!" Sionis shook his head, "That is a Kujan transport! It has missile launchers and if it targets us we are as good as dead. You get out of this ship now and lets move!" "We can't let them escape!"
The Transport was pulling away and Sionis gave up on pulling Michael from the ship as it climbed out of sight. "Recon Squads don't have ships like that," Sionis said quietly, "They were testing us. They just wanted to see how we would react to them." "So what comes next?" "Honestly," Sionis said with a shrug, "I have no idea."
